Thurs Evening Program on Trails

The Shasta College just opened another portion of the Trails connecting schools and points of interest around the city.  The Sacramento River Discovery Center's Thursday evening program on October 20th at 7 pm will feature Tom Orr of Shasta College, Scott Timboe of City of Red Bluff Planning, Randy Jero of Mendocino National Forest and Adam Hansen of Tehama County transportation in a discussion of where we are with the trails/bikeway plan and how can we as individuals and groups complete this project started so many years ago. Come bring your ideas. The second part of this presentation will take place at the Thursday Evening Meeting on November 17th at the Farm Bureau building at 275 Sale Lane. For more information about the Sacramento River Discovery Center please call Bobie at 527-1196 or e-mail her at bhughe1@tehamaed.org .  The Center is located at 1000 Sale Lane and features a demonstration garden with native and drought tolerant plants- currently the fall plants are in bloom.  The SRDC Plant Sale will be held November 5th from 9 am to 1 pm in the SRDC parking lot.

Sacramento River Discovery Center and Tehama County Resource Conservation District

The Tehama County Resource Conservation District (TCRCD) was awarded a grant to assist the fire protection districts in Paynes Creek and Manton area. The purpose of the grant was to remove large quantities of brush and trees from the landscape in order to create fire breaks. A large commercial was purchased with the grant funds. The project has been successful and the chipper can now be used by organizations and property owners.

One of the first organization's to benefit is the Sacramento River Discovery Center (SRDC). Ryan Sale, Board member of the TCRCD was approached by Bobie Hughes of SRDC, upon seeing the large accumulation of brush and trees near his Sale Lane prune orchard property. “TCRCD had taken a large pile of cuttings from our Discovery Garden cleanup efforts and turned it into about 1cubic yard of wood chips in 30 minutes” commented Bobie Hughes. “The SRDC is working to rebuild its native and drought tolerant plant demonstration garden and needs a quantity of chips to help reduce the return of invasive weeds and grasses. “We asked Ryan if he would be willing to have his material chipped rather doing is usual burning in winter. Ryan agreed to our proposal and so the chipper and crew are developing procedures to help property owners create defensible space on their property and help the environment at the same time.”

It is great having a partnership with the TCRCD”, reported Board chairman Ben Hughes from SRDC. “They have the tools the public has a solution to fire danger situation and there are places that want and need mulching materials.” “The SRDC is happy to be one of the first benefactors of this commercial chipper.”

Property owners can rent the TCRCD's chipper and operators to help clear defensible space around their property, commented Vicky Dawley the Director of the TCRCD. After seeing the devastating fires in Texas this year, our area residents should be serious about this type of disaster occurring in our own backyard.”

For more information about this project please contact the Tehama County Resource Conservation District at 527-3013 extension 5. The office is located at 2 John Sutter Square in Red Bluff, near Days Inn.
